Metal Mount or Mount in Metal UHF RFID tags
by Geoff Dewhurst
October 28, 2008 SkyRFID Inc. recently announced the availability of an entire range of ceramic RFID Inlay tags for Metal Mount or Mount in Metal applications. With read ranges from 2 meters to over 6 meters, and temperature ranges of up to 200 °C these tags fit into many asset and product tracking solutions where higher temperatures are required or where very small size is necessary.

The smallest metal mount RFID inlay tag now available is a 25.5 mm x 9 mm x 3 mm (1” x 0.35” x 0.11”) tag that you can fasten to a metal object using the attached self-adhesive tape strip on the back of the tag. This tiny tag gives a read distance of 2 meters (6.56 feet) and handles temperatures from -40° C through 150°C (-40°F to 334°F). This tag is perfect for PCB boards, small assets, and other product identification requirements which can use a mount on metal tag this size.

The new “mount in metal” high temperature tag is almost as small with a form factor of 21 mm X 17 mm x 2 mm (0.82” x 0.66” x 0.07”) and handles up to 200°C or 392 °F while providing a read distance of 1 meter (39”). Metallic mould management, asset management and product identification are three areas where this tag has an excellent fit. Virtually any small metal object that is capable of having a recess to house this tag is where it can be utilized most.

Also introduced were several other Multi - Purpose Metal tags that could be used for warehousing, pallet tracking, asset management, product identification and automotive component tracking. These tags are somewhat larger – from 80 mm x 11 mm x 3.7 mm (3.14” x 0.43” x 0.137”) with a 5 meter (16.40 feet) read distance to 130 mm x 22 mm x 3.7 mm ( 5.08” x 0.86” x 0.137”) with a 6 meter (19.68 feet) read distance. The maximum temperatures on these tags are from 120°C to 150°C (280°F to 334°F) which is plenty high enough for most applications. One of the tags has a 128 Bit memory and the remainder are all EPC Gen 2 96 bit standards.

Now SkyRFID provides a wide portfolio of metal mount or mount on metal tags that can be used in almost any situation where you need to read Gen 2 tag from at least 1 meter away.
