| RFP: Color-Chaning Sticker or Indicators |
| by David Zhou |
A Fortune 500 company is inviting proposals for cost-effective technologies for color changing stickers/indicators. Stickers should change color visibly in 2-6 months independent of exposure to winter and summer outdoor temperatures and sunlight conditions.
Background
The food industry uses color changing labels for various time-related applications, such as
badges, date codes, etc. These stickers are cost-effective but very sensitive to temperature swings because they rely on a diffusion control mechanism to activate the color change.
In the client's application, stickers must withstand exposure to weathering cycles typical of outdoor seasoned temperatures. Most existing color change technologies are not acceptable for this application. Alternative approaches must overcome the temperature independence requirement.
Possible Approaches
Possible approaches might include but are not limited to:
Diffusion control color change labels or stickers that insensitive to temperature swings.
Screen-printed capacitor/resistor combinations
Liquid crystal technologies
LED technologies
RFID technologies
Timeline
Phase 1 - Proof of concept, internal pilot test, and pilot test in the field within 5-9 months.
Phase 2 - Commercialization in 9-12 months.
