I heard a little bit about this technology. Basically, it's designed to replace barcode. It's part of RFID technology. Unlike silicon-based RFID tags, it's much cheaper to allow large deployment for item-level tracking. It can use common solution-based deposition approach such as coating or screen, inkjet or offset printing.
University of Toronto, IBM Toronto Lab and Xerox Research Centre of Canada have this kind of research.
